Leading from Within: Authentic Leadership for the Twenty-first Century

Join us for a fascinating talk by Dr Margaret Benefiel '75, author of several books, including Soul At Work.

The talk will focus on the issues around what happens to the heart and soul of a leader when they are, as most current leaders are, rewarded for their drive, decisiveness, productivity, and long work hours.

The past decade has witnessed scandal after scandal: in business, in non-profits, in religious institutions. Leaders give in to pressures to cook the books, to make a quick buck, or to the allurements of greed, lust, and power. Businesses lose their reputations and their customers. Public institutions lose the confidence of their constituencies. Churches lose the trust of their members. This world of scandals desperately needs authentic leaders, leaders in touch with their hearts and souls.

This talk will focus on reorienting the work of leadership by attending to the leader's inner life. It will address the questions: What would it look like, both for the leader and for the organization a leader serves, for a leader to cultivate the inner life, to step off the treadmill, to take time for personal reflection? How can leaders find the resources they need for nurturing their inner lives in the midst of the pressures of leadership? What does leadership arising from a core of personal authenticity look like?
