We will read the book assigned by Princeton’s President Eisgruber to all incoming freshmen; and then meet over drinks and snacks to watch video of the discussion on campus with the author, followed by our own discussion of the book.

The Princeton Pre-read selection for the Class of 2021 is What Is Populism? by Jan-Werner Müller, a Princeton Professor of Politics. It offers a careful and comprehensive investigation of a concept--populism--used to describe a diverse array of political movements around the world. Released in 2016 before the US election and the Brexit vote, it is a timely review of a hot topic. Professor Müller joined Pres Eisgruber, several faculty members, and members of the Class of 2021 for a spirited discussion of the book. An author Q&A is on the Princeton website, here:

The book is available now on Amazon UK, in paperback and Kindle editions.

The Pre-read program, initiated by President Eisgruber in 2013, introduces incoming freshmen to Princeton’s intellectual life. Pres Eisgruber selects and sends a book to incoming freshmen to read prior to their arrival on campus. Freshmen then discuss the book and its concepts with student leaders during Orientation and with Pres Eisgruber in the residential colleges and elsewhere during the academic year.
