The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams

An informal reception will follow the talk.

John Quincy Adams AB 1787 AM 1790 was the sixth President of the United States (1825-1829) and was considered one of the greatest diplomats and secretaries of state in American history. He served as envoy extraordinary to the Court of St James (1814-1817) amongst his many diplomatic postings.  He was the first President elected who was the son of a former President, John Adams. He kept a diary throughout much of his life – one of the major original sources used by historians to understand the building of America as a nation.

To learn more about this extraordinary individual join Phyllis Lee Levin as she discusses her biography of John Quincy Adams. Kirkus* calls The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adam, published by Palgrave Macmillan, a “vivid biography” and an “intimate, richly detailed portrait of a powerful political figure.”  Levin is the author of several previous books, including Edith and Woodrow: The Wilson White House (Scribner, 2001), Abigail Adams: A Biography (St. Martin’s Press, 1987), and a pioneering analysis of the fashion industry, The Wheels of Fashion(Doubleday, 1965).  From her start out of Mount Holyoke College in 1941 as editor of the legendary college board issue of Mademoiselle to her work as one of a remarkably talented and trailblazing group of colleagues who met in the women’s news department at The New York Times, and then in her career as an independent historian, Phyllis Lee Levin’s work has been characterized by lively, empathetic writing grounded in meticulous research.
